PhD Candidate

Ferguson lab - University of Guelph

May 2015 – Present Guelph, Ontario

Responsibilities include:

  • Worked on investigating factors affecting the evolution of Icelandic Arctic charr morphs
  • Quantified morphological variation in various Arctic charr morphs and assessed the role of allometry in the diversificaiton process
  • Used stable isotope signatures to assess resource use of Arctic charr morphs
  • Used SNPs to assess the role of demography and selection during the divergence process
  • Mentored undergraduate students
  • Coordinator for the Univeristy of Guelphs R users group (UGRU)

Research assistant

Ferguson lab - University of Guelph

Jan 2015 – Apr 2015 Guelph, Ontario

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisted with genetic lab work, research projects, and aquaculture rearing of Arctic charr

Research assistant

Spence lab - University of Alberta

May 2014 – Aug 2014 Edmonton, Alberta

Responsibilities include:

  • Worked on non-native carabid beetle species: Pterostichus melanarius
  • Pitfall trapped a variety of arthropods on a 1200 x 250 meter trapping grid
  • Worked alone and in groups within a mixed stand forest at George Lake, Alberta
  • Assisted in setting up multiple experiments and data collection
  • Morphologically identified various arthropod species

Paleontological technician

The Royal Tyrrell Museum

May 2012 – Aug 2012 Drumheller, Alberta

Responsibilities include:

  • Worked on preparing fossils from the late Cretaceous period for the museum
  • Communicated geological and paleontological information to tourists and museum visitors
  • Completed a variety of field work in a semi-arid environment identifying, extracting, and transporting fossils.

Accomplishments

Ecological opportunity promotes diversifying selection and facilitates rapid phenotypic divergence in Icelandic Arctic charr

Presented a poster on the relationship between niche availability, phenotypic trade-offs, and gene flow during the morphological divergence process of Icelandic Arctic charr

University of Guelphs R users group (UGRU)

Started as one of the co-organizers and facilitators of UGRU. I aided in planning the schedule for the R based working group, leading tutorials, and facilitating learning. The R users group works to promote cooperative learning in a friendly and stress free environment

Parallelism of morphological and ecological divergence in Icelandic Arctic charr

Presented the same results from the charr conference (see below)

Parallelism of morphological and ecological divergence in Icelandic Arctic charr

Presented work from my PhD on the paralellism of morphological and ecological divergence. The talk outlines the relationship between morphological and ecological variation in replicate populations of Icelandic Arctic charr

CSEE 2018 organizing committee

I was apart of the workshop and program organizing committees for the 2018 CSEE conference. I aided in putting together various workshops, including an R based workshop. I also aided in putting together the program and schedule for the conference.

The evolution of morphological divergence in Icelandic Arctic charr

Presented work from my PhD on the morphological divergence of Icelandic Arctic charr. The talk outlined how allometric variation can affect and bias morphological divergence along parallel evolutionary trajectories during adaptive divergence

Transferred from MSc to PhD

Transferred from the MSc program to the PhD program at the University of Guelph, in the department of Integrative biology

National Icelandic Biology Conference (NIBC)

Presented a poster at the NIBC on my MSc work at the time

BSc ecological specialization with distinction

Graduated from the University of Alberta (UofA) with distinction (3.7 gpa)
